Biography
Judy Chicago (b. 1939), is a Chicago-born artist and trailblazing figure in feminist art. The daughter of a labor organizer, Chicago has spent over six decades creating work reflecting her ardent commitment to activism. Judy Chicago earned her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1962, and her M.A. from UCLA in 1964. Upon graduation, Chicago taught at 11 different educational institutions. Throughout her career, Chicago has advocated for the recognition of women’s rights and art, as well as the power of art as an instrument for social and intellectual transformation.
Judy Chicago is best known for The Dinner Party (1974-79), a multimedia symbolic history of women in Western civilization involving the participation of hundreds of volunteers that has been seen by over one million viewers across in 6 countries. In 2018, Times Magazine named Chicago one of the top ‘100 Most Influential People.’ Chicago’s life and work stand as models for a broader definition of art, an expanded role for the artist, and women’s right to freedom of expression.
