Biography
Andy Dixon (b. 1979, Vancouver) is a Los Angeles based self-taught artist and former musician. As a member of Canadian punk band d.b.s. in the 1990s and early 2000s, Dixon utilized sampled musical elements and designed merch-table goods such as T-shirts and stickers by cutting and pasting found images. These influences are clear in Dixon’s artistic process, which he describes as sampling until he reaches a composition he likes before translating it onto canvas. In the early 2000s, Dixon was behind the design for the album covers of bands such as Death from Above, Hot Hot Heat, and the Blood Brothers. Since 2012, however, Dixon has focused entirely on painting. With saturated colors and sharp forms, Dixon’s recent artworks juxtapose art historical symbols with modern cultural markers, aiming to recontextualize the tradition of displaying wealth. In including luxury items (Versace shirts, Lamborghinis, vases) alongside reclining nudes, Dixon explores themes of taste, materiality, and identity, drawing into question how socially permissible flaunting markers of wealth has been throughout history. Through this approach, Dixon acknowledges art’s role as a luxury item, partially making fun of himself for “selling out” and thereby “betraying” his punk rock roots. The artist uses terms such as “California,” “the eighties,” “pop”, and “old Looney Toons cartoons” to describe his work, citing British painter David Hockney’s work as an important source of inspiration.
